Comedy, nudity, and the just plain bizarre collide in The First Nudie Musical. In hopes of making enough money to save his troubled movie studio, Harry Schecter (Stephen Nathan) and his plucky secretary, Rosie (Cindy Williams, pre-Laverne & Shirley), cook up the world’s first pornographic musical. What follows is a loosely plotted collection of comedy bits and musical numbers (written by Rene Hall and codirector Bruce Kimmel) that, while not always successful, have a raw energy and charm that’s hard to resist. The movie as a whole looks like it’s been done by a new sketch comedy troupe with plenty of spirit and almost enough rehearsal. Yes, there is full-frontal nudity, and once you’re done feeling bad for the first group of naked chorines performing in a roomful of fully clothed men, it all goes fine. Though many of the bits misfire, there is plenty of genuinely funny stuff, and even when there isn’t, the movie is so weird that it’s hard to stop watching. –Ali Davis

Nathanael West’s The Day of the Locust is by consensus the great Hollywood novel, a poison-pen letter aimed squarely at the tinsel heart of the movie biz. Only in the 1970s could Hollywood actually hazard a film of this story, and the result is suitably corrosive. William Atherton is the observer Tod, Karen Black the blond starlet Faye, and Donald Sutherland the hulking Homer–but they are easily out-acted by the colorful supporting cast. In particular, Burgess Meredith’s exhausted showbizzy salesman and Billy Barty’s strutting dwarf are superbly crafted gargoyles in this Hollywood wax museum. Director John Schlesinger piles on the rancid atmosphere and rampant hypocrisy until the movie fairly drowns in its own grotesqu vision. Long before the climactic apocalyptic riot, the film has torn itself up. There’s no substitute for West’s wicked prose, so the adaptation comes across as a literal-minded screech rather than a tru bonfire of the vanities. –Robert Horton

The popular series was already beginning to turn smug and self-indulgent by 1983, when the first sequl was released. The visually inventive action comedy of the bracing original (which for some reason is not currently available on video) was replaced with a lot of mugging slapstick, as affianced cops Baldy (Karl Mak) and Inspector Ho (the glorious Sylvia Chang) are repeatedly waylaid by criminal activity on their way to the altar. Meanwhile, master thief King Kong (played by pop star Sam Hui, brother of Michael) has been framed for a series of robberies, and a Caucasian hit man named Filthy Harry keeps trying to bump everybody off. It’s not what you’d call a tightly plotted picture, but director Eric Tsang designs sequnces that are thrilling on a purely graphic level–like the squads of identical motorbikes and Jaguars that execute choreographed pirouttes during the chase sequnces. Beanpole genius movie director Tsui Hark (Once Upon a Time in China) has a brief supporting role. –David Chute

While it invites charges of Hollywood nepotism, Orange County overcomes that stigma with a delightful cast of newcomers and veterans alike. It’s no better or worse than many teen comedies, but director Jake Kasdan (son of director Lawrence Kasdan) astutely combines teen-flick staples (stoner gags, raucous parties) with a biting undercurrent of southern California absurdity. This comedic texture helps Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek) to prove their big-screen promise. They play (respectively) an Orange County teen and aspiring writer named Shaun who yearns for admission to Stanford, and his sensible girlfriend who knows just how to nurture his dreams. Much of the comedy arises from the foibles of Shaun’s dysfunctional family (played to perfection by Jack Black, Catherine O’Hara, and John Lithgow), while unbilled cameos by Ben Stiller and Kevin Kline add zest to a movie that tries to be different, and mostly succeeds. –Jeff Shannon
