This woefully underappreciated racy film was created by the team unhurried the extraordinary Watership Down. The record concerns a pair of dogs, Rowf and Snitter, who race from an animal-testing lab in the wilds of England and their attempts to survive in a frigid and hostile world. Rowf and Snitter traverse the wilds and encounter both a fox named The Tod who trains them in the ways of being wild and humans who are either terrified of them or try to hunt them. The film is excellently entertaining and touches on themes of friendship, bravery, and animal rights. The ending is very appealing and always makes me shed a dawdle or two.

Many talented people lent their skills to this movie. Martin Rosen, also the creator of Watership Down, led a team which took almost two years to painstakingly craft this masterpiece. Among the actors who gave vocal performances for The Plague Dogs are John Damage, Nigel Hawthorne, and Patrick Stewart as an army major. I was even surprised to gape Brad Bird’s (creator of The Iron Giant and The Incredibles) name in the credits as an animator!

Unfortunately, while the film itself is expansive, this DVD leaves a puny bit to be desired. The movie is presented in its North American edited length of 85 minutes. There is apparently a longer 99-minute chop available on DVD from Australia, but only in PAL video format. The film itself looks in glorious helpful condition for being almost 25 years mature. Other than Scene Selection and Interactive Menus (as if those even count), the DVD is devoid of any special features. Another feature lacking on the DVD that I do miss from my obsolete VHS copy is closed captions or subtitles. I have a exiguous disaster making out some of the difficult British Isles accents, especially from The Tod and the sheepherding dogs.

I highly recommend that fans of adult, drama-oriented animation (and Watership Down fans in particular) check this one out. Despite its barebones DVD presentation, it’s a stout, much film that deserves to be seen. I give the film 5 stars but subtract 1 star for the lackluster DVD presentation.

I don’t really have a lot to add about the film itself that the other reviewers haven’t already said; this is a dismal, distressing, relentlessly grim and harrowing film about two dogs on the speed from an animal research laboratory. It has a somewhat plain slump at times, and powerful of the animation is gross by today’s standards, but it has tons of character. It’s not exactly a splendid experience but it has immense power and a worthwhile message. Honest to form it certain (if it isn’t already), this is outmoded material only reliable for older teens and adults.

I actually unprejudiced wanted to address a couple of points in a previous review (possible spoilers coming) . The recent film, released in the UK in 1982, was 1 hour 42 minutes - this is the chubby, unedited version which can ONLY be found on the Australian DVD release (the quality isn’t expansive, but at least you’re getting to sight the whole film) . The incompatibility in running time (99 mins on DVD as against 102 mins in theaters) is simply down to the fact that films urge slightly faster on VHS and DVD than they do on the tremendous screen; ALL films are approximately 3 - 4% shorter when transfered to home entertainment formats.

When it came time to release the film in the USA, director Martin Rosen had sizable trouble finding a distributor willing to consume it on. That shouldn’t reach as too grand of a surprise; the film is far too disturbing for kids or families, and adults are likely to dismiss an gripping feature with talking animals as kids’ stuff - so who exactly would pay to observe this movie? In an peril to placate the distributors, Rosen was forced to chop 17 minutes from the film’s running time. Some of the cuts were simply made to rush up the straggle, and others were made to retract some of the more awful scenes (most notably the survey of a human corpse which the starving, desperate dogs have partially eaten) . Needless to say, these cuts did diminutive to lighten the film’s grim tone, and it only ever received a brief and extremely tiny speed at a few US theaters. Unfortunately, it is this shorter version that has been broken-down for most of the unusual DVD releases; as I mentioned before, only the Australian edition has both versions included.

There were some changes to the situation in the transfer from original to hide. The somewhat forced but nevertheless welcome gay ending in the book was removed, to fabricate the film a more mighty anti-vivisection statement. Also the fate of the fox, or The Tod as he is known, was changed; in the book he falls victim to a hunt, whereas in the film he sacrifices himself to a pack of army hounds as a distraction, allowing the two titular dogs to hurry (temporarily) on a content. This was NOT changed due to any pressure from pro-hunting groups; neither Richard Admas or his admirers would have tolerated such a proceed. I imagine it was changed to allow the Tod’s death to play a more critical portion in driving the state forward, and to exhibit us the wily fox was a wonderful fellow in the ruin.

This film creeps up on you and is absolutely piquant. It’s the simple fable of an aging mass-market crime-fiction writer called Sarah Morton (Charlotte Rampling) who rambles off to the French countryside to secure relaxation and hopefully inspiration for her next-in-the-series mystery book. While staying at her publisher’s luxurious yet quaint summer retreat, she is confronted by his young daughter Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) . Subsequently, all sorts of wild, unpredictable mischief ensues as the prim and splendid Englishwoman clashes with the sexually carefree vixen, who evolves into an unexpected muse to the older woman.

My pal Oscar and I have spent the summer watching a number of French films, and one thing we both have learned and agree on is that for the most fragment, unlike most mainstream American films, they are mostly unpredictable. SWIMMING POOL is no different. Impartial when I belief I had it figured out, a number of curious spot twists fade the account down an unsettling and unforgiving path until a sensitive and poignant ending reveals tragic truths about life, getting musty, and the whimsy of youth that can be difficult for the young to face but which in many ways are empowering to those getting on in the years. If the film instructs anywhere, it is in the wisdom that we are only as primitive as we feel.

Expect tantalizingly erotic moments, mostly surrounding Ms. Sagnier’s natural sensuality. There’s plenty of eye-candy here, and in the viewing, one cannot aid but feel strangely connected to the voyeuristic tendencies exhibited by Sarah as her improper stoicism slowly disintegrates. Indeed, remarkable of the film’s tension and eroticism is experienced through the characters’ eyes.

Ernest Hemingway said, “I like to listen. I have learned a spacious deal from listening carefully. Most people never listen.” Surely the realm of the author is also to see, and more importantly, to behold, as sharply illustrated by Sarah Morton’s experience. In the kill, her book may be the better for it — to the possible chagrin of her publisher. Thus in some scheme, the film has remarkable to say about the intention literature is produced (through a “sexual” creative act) and how authors are oft times stripped of soul, reduced to rote formula, marketed, sold and neglected in pursuit of the next best selling author down the pike. In the film, Sarah attempts to transcend this trend through her collision with the young Julie (and in her fictional portrayal in the book she is writing) .

Expect to be somewhat dismayed by the ending, but give it a moment, attach the pieces together and it will all create sense. It’s shear pleasure to appreciate a film these days that doesn’t gain in the blanks for the audience, and this tiny gem is a positive winner. The glowing acting betrays the taint of sentimentality. The sublime beauty and bright verisimilitude of the setting and cinematography enhance the overall cinematic experience, and in more than one instance will leave the viewer breathless.

Some might complain that the film seems to pace, but this is right of many French films I’ve seen. This one is no different. Rather than commit to a rigid anecdote obtain, the film appears more like a painting, with rich textures and colors folded onto the canvas in layers. Each scene builds on the last, every moment touches the next. The film is an experience as great as it is a anecdote.

A theory: The writer made up the whole account. She does indeed select the house in France, and maybe makes phone calls to the editor, which he ignores, but staring at the swimming pool from her window gives her another notion for a book. I judge she’s sick of herself, her books and her readers. (Mediate of her reaction in the editor’s office when the other author says his mother can’t wait for her next book. Also on the subway she doesn’t retort that she’s the author of the book the corpulent middle-aged lady is reading.)

In my plan, the characters: Julie, the waiter, all those men; the situation: the execute, the diary, the epic of Julie’s mother, the editor as a libertine - all made up. She includes herself in the fable, acts it out in her mind, and what we gaze is the acting out. She’d rather be the person she portrays herself as. Know what I mean? She makes herself sexier and more blooming (remember how glad she was that the waiter preferred her to Julie? ) . She makes herself clever and dauntless when she helps Julie veil up her crime. She makes herself more maternal when she comforts Julie and understands the loss of her mother. Julie trusts her even when she finds out she’s read her diary. I believe she’s miffed at her editor over perceived slights and doesn’t consider he respects her talents except in a exiguous blueprint. Even in the ruin, she’s very elated with her modern book and knows it’s her best by far, but he likes the accurate cash cow. She knew he would which is why she gave it to another publisher, although she’ll give him her next Inspector So & So book.

The biggest clue to me was at the destroy in the editor’s office. He’s read the book and although he doesn’t care for it, is not upset or wrathful which he would have been if it had really been about his daughter; if he had recognized himself as the creepy, absent father, and included his wife’s epic, which he supposedly had read and notion was destroyed. He doesn’t react because he doesn’t recognize any resemblance between himself and the people in her legend because there is none. And of course in walks cute, bulky dinky Julia, and by the contrivance they greet each other you know there’s a first-rate relationship between them.

Rocketman, the hero of this 1949 Republic serial offering, was also known to movie (and later television) audiences as “Commando Cody” (in “Radar men from From the Moon” and the “Commando Cody” limited-run tele-serial), and as “Larry Martin” in the “Zombies of the Stratosphere” chapterplay, which featured a young Leonard Nimoy as a malevolent alien invader.

The “Commando Cody” moniker was the most utilized name for this character, but the unique serial, “King of the Rocketmen”, is universally recognized as the best presentation of this flying obedient hero(whom many “boomers” fondly bewitch as “archaic bullethead”. Help in the 1930’s novelist Zane Grey created an action-adventure character, Sgt. Dave King of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and keep him in a book titled

“King of the Royal Mounted”. Republic Pictures bought the rights to this and turned this “King” into an valid serial feature starring Allen “Rocky” Lane. After this, Republic was off and running on a “King” binge that lasted for years. A hero who had the last name of King would pop up repeatedly in Republic serials. There was a “King of the Texas Rangers”, a “King of the Forest Rangers”, a “King of the Rocketmen”, and so forth. In fact, Republic’s very last serial was…what else? …”King of the Carnival”.

This one is likely the best of the lot. It is a film that the broken-down “Cloak Thrills Illustrated” magazine, years ago, pronounced “The last vast serial to be made in Hollywood”. There were some Trustworthy ones after it, but most serial fans do assume this was the last Tremendous one.

The epic concerns a scientific think-tank/research facility in California called “Science Associates” . This group does high level inventive research. One of the members, scientist Jeff King, has been working secretly on a flying suit,which consists of a metal helmet, a leather flight jacket, a rocket jet-pack for the succor, and a control unit attached to the front of the jacket. With this suit on, Jeff can select off and sail through the air like Captain Marvel or Superman (the fact that he has no wings to give him aerodynamic capture is ignored, as is the fact that his unprotected lower relieve, buttocks, and legs would score burned off by the rocket flames….hey! Its a kid serial!!!) .

Jeff has to get a “mystery persona”…Rocketman…when Science Associates comes under assault by a mystery man called “Doctor Vulcan”, who seems to be someone among their maintain group. Vulan sends out his henchmen to do wicked deeds throughout the serial, and Jeff King thwarts them time and again. The flying effects are radiant. Stuntman David Sharpe is up suspended on a wire rig for some matte-work flying scenes, but most of the aerial footage is done with a life-size dummy pulled along through the air on parallel wires through some California hills and canyons; the same technique ragged when “Captain Marvel” flew a few years earlier. Some writers have claimed that this was an “oversized” dummy eight feet long. It wasn’t. It was a LIFE size dummy (Republic wasn’t going to fabricate a special situation of oversized clothes for an oversized dummy…that wasn’t economical in the least…and if republic was anything, it was ECONOMICAL!!) . The dummy represented a SIX-FOOT man. The eight-foot figure is arrived at when you realize the arms were extended out in front of the figure to relate horizontal “flight”. Arms on a male six-foot adult are approximately two feet long when extended, ergo, a LIFE-size manikin, with arms extended upwards (when vertical), would tape out at approximately eight feet from fingertips to toe-tips.

Wired up and shot by effects wizards Howard and Theodore Lydecker, the flying dummy was a view to look. Extremely realistic for what it was. And the dummy shots, intercut with the take-off and landing stuntwork by David Sharpe, is truly awesome. The flying effects are distinguished better than the CARTOON Superman flights of the movie serials, AND better than the pole-and-chest-plate matte shots of George Reeves “flying” in the Superman t.v. series.

One of the best action scenes in the film is a beautifully staged and edited sequence in the spicy last chapter. Ahead of the Army bomber flight, Rocketman dives on the hideout shack and takes on Dirkin and Vulcan in a mad fistfight. He wants the decimator shut down for clear.

The sequence begins with the dummy in a approach vertical dive on the cabin, sailing down towards an launch window. The editor does a hastily chop as the dummy reaches the window and then Dave Sharpe (in the “stunt version of the flying suit), sails into the exact situation…coming DOWN…HEAD first…hits the floor, somersaults to his feet, and blasts into the baddies’ stunt doubles with fists flying. A precise Run of a sequence.

Everything in this serial works, from the flying effects to the tidal wave stock footage from RKO’s “Deluge”, to the big photograpy and film editing, and to the outstanding stunt work by masters like David Sharpe, Tom Steele,and all the rest of “The Cousins”, as Republic’s stunt team was known.

This is a really, really exquisite serial from the “golden age”. Now we need two more to appreciate on DVD : “Survey Smasher” (My maintain accepted for “greatest sound serial ever made”…sorry “Captain Marvel”) and “The Masked Marvel”, a superlative WWII counter-sabotage showcase for stunt ace Tom Steele. Let’s hope we can contemplate these soon!!!

KING OF THE ROCKET MEN is a very exquisite serial and I’m gay it’s coming to DVD at last.

By this slow in the serial game (1949), Republic Studios had a tendency to go through the motions, getting by on the reputation (and re-releases) of earlier, better serials and the studio’s matchless stunt and special effects men. That changed in 1948, when Columbia released SUPERMAN, which - despite the fact that it was a disappointment on every level - became the biggest money-making serial ever made. Republic, which had perfected “flying human” special effects with their earlier serials DARKEST AFRICA (1936) and THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL (1941), concocted their have airborne super-hero, Rocket Man, and bested the Man of Steel handily.

Tris Coffin, nobody’s opinion of a blooming, two-fisted hero (he specialized in playing weaselly henchmen or slick con-artists) is Jeff King, the guy in the rocket suit. He surprises all of us by being a very effective hero, not least of all because he suddenly loses the moustache and turns into ace stuntman Tom Steele whenever a fight breaks out.

Speaking of ace stuntmen, not only is Steele doubling for the leading man, he plays one (or more) of Vulcan’s henchmen, and the gang of thugs includes Dale Van Sickel and Dave Sharpe, two of the studio’s other qualified stuntmen, who compose double (and sometimes triple) duty in the same scenes, doubling the heroes, themselves, and probably the cameramen and script girl. It’s a delight to observe.

The place entails Rocket Man battling a mysterious archfiend named Dr. Vulcan, who’s after a deathray that he plans to consume to blackmail the civilized world. Along the arrangement, Original York City is destroyed by a tidal wave (via stock footage from the 1933 film DELUGE) but the mayor doesn’t seem to mind very worthy. By the procedure, despite the serial’s title, if you’re expecting a scene in which hordes of flying rocketmen swoop down and proclaim Tris Coffin their leader, well, don’t regain your hopes up.

The DVD of KING OF THE ROCKET MEN is quite nice, with a apt recount and colossal, hiss-free sound. (You’ll have to supply your fill hissing.) It includes bonus trailers from a wealth of vintage sci-fi and anxiety titles from the same company, including THE HEADLESS GHOST, ROBOT MONSTER, DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS and several others, plus a number of drive-in movie snack bar ads.

I stumbled across this delicious gem of a film recently: as everything I’ve ever read & seen of Hardy is quite tragic, I was expecting quite the same from this…boy, was I in for a surprise! This light-hearted romance comes from the usually gloom & doom Thomas Hardy pen: well-acted & filmed, this movie is a nice treat…

When Adore Day returns to Mellstock to care for her father & converse the local schoolchildren, she creates quite a stir: the townspeople don’t quite know what to produce of this educated girl & the parson’s plans to replace their beloved choir with her playing of the “harmonia” (organ) . Comely soon the sweet & comely Appreciate has attracted the gaze of three men: a terrible but aesthetic carrier, a rich but crass farmer and a gentlemanly but estimable parson. Her father urges her to marry well, but Appreciate wants to follow her heart: will accurate worship regain out in the waste?!

For those of you panicked about squawk, it is kept to a few stolen kisses between an unmarried couple; there is also some time when a young man is in the river with his shirt off & he & a young lady seize a kiss. There is some still carousing, as a few of the townsfolk display up to the church a bit tipsy on cider.

I was quite impressed by this film: I kept waiting for the black, depressing side of Hardy to approach out & almost couldn’t own that the tone of the film seemed to be upbeat most of the time. Surprisingly, the film stayed on the happier side & ended quite nicely: I cherish Hardy’s other stories, but it is quite refreshing to recognize that he was not always doom & gloom, and could pen such a sweet & bright fable as this!! Highly recommended!

UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE, published arrangement support in 1872, is Thomas Hardy’s first current modern. So many of Hardy’s beloved novels have the underlying theme of forbidden care for. Someone is always in treasure with a person from the nefarious social class. Who could forget the absorbing Bathsheba Everdene in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD and the spell she casts on three defenseless men (well 2 of them, anyway)? UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE is the charming and adorable anecdote of Miss Love Day, the aesthetic and racy schoolteacher who is hired by the town parson to utter the children of Mellstock. And here again, a spell is fleet cast on three men.

First, we have Dick Dewy, the horrified and comely carrier (predecessor to though-provoking van company) who is quite awful. Then there is Frederic (Farmer) Shiner the wealthiest man in Mellstock (and Fancy’s father’s choice) . Last, we have Mr. Maybold, the arrogant town parson who feels very apt to his parishioners.

Music also ‘plays’ an necessary allotment in this lighthearted cramped fable. The church choir is constantly playing their instruments or singing. They welcome Miss Day to the community by serenading her under her window. They are also replaced–much to everyone’s consternation, by Pastor Maybold’s modern harmonium (at the Church) . There are many parties and dances that use this small orchestra. Even at the demolish of the film, these musicians again serenade Fanny in an act of contrition. She has become very despondent about her future in this minute village and when the band plays, she realizes that she truly loves where she lives. In fact, upon being proposed to by Mr. Maybold, she retorts, (when told how kindly she is to the villagers) “As for me, I’m……I’m a woman of Mellstock.”

We can assure what season it is by looking at the leaves on the Greenwood Tree in the slight village. It takes a year for the leading characters in this legend to create major transformations in their thoughts and actions: Dick Dewy becomes ambitious to derive the affections of Worship. Cherish and her father also change……………farmer Shiner will be blissful to change in order to gather Fancy’s affections!

I absolutely adored this exiguous film (as I do Thomas Hardy) . Compared to Hardy’s other works, this is a remarkable lighter fare. It collected has the titillating heroine and the tall romance but we don’t have to go through any of the mountainous sadness and torment that we gain in his deeper novels. Hardy, who grew up in a town like Mellstock, took the title from a poem by Shakespeare’s, AS YOU LIKE IT:

Under the greenwood tree,

Who loves to lie with me,

And turn his merry note

Unto the sweet bird’s throat,

Come hither, reach hither, near hither;

Here shall he see

No enemy

But winter and rough weather.

Called the “Season of Secrets” by the producers of the series, NCIS SEASON 4 actually turned out worthy more complicated than most of the actors, writers, directors, and fans wanted it to be. For the first time, the series sought to fabricate ongoing storylines that would elevate NCIS to a soap opera level that wasn’t worthy appreciated.

The season was too busy. Too worthy plotting demanded watching every episode in sequence rather than casually dropping in for entertainment. Even with devoted attendance instead of a casual near, these extended storylines took far too long to get.

I got irritated and impatient with all the split plotlines and romances. When I eye the crimes shows I sustain up with, I depend on them to be piquant and sharp, but not to the point that I have to support notes. I didn’t look HEROES in its first season speed for this very reason, and it’s also why I abdicate 24. I picked those shows up in DVD and squander weekends of marathon viewing on them.

I watched episodes throughout season 4 of NCIS and enjoyed them on one hand, but I had some positive problems with them on the other. It is somewhat better being able to sit down and search for them in sequence and fairly cessation together. But the fact that the season ended on a cliffhanger is also disappointing. Thankfully, season 5 returns to how the episodes were initially done.

I don’t mind the two- or three-episode arcs, but I want to be casually entertained, and not driven to fanaticism or desperation.

Unfortunately, series creator and television guru Donald P. Bellisario is no longer attached to the series. Sign Harmon and many others stood against Bellisario and basically took the indicate over. Since NCIS is a hit and can’t survive without the actors and actresses (who were being forced into 16-hours days powerful of the time, according to reports), their wants were attended to first.

Mark Harmon stars as the abrasive and canny team leader, Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Michael Weatherly plays fan-favorite Anthony DiNozzo, whose esteem of movies constantly shows in his reference throughout the series. David McCallum portrays the team’s forensic examiner, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. Pauley Perrette stars as the wickedly astounding and super-smart Abby Sciuto. Sean Murray (Bellisario’s real-life stepson) plays Timothy McGee. Cote de Pablo plays ex-Israeli Mossad agent Ziva David. Lauren Holly stars as the NCIS director, Jenny Shepard.

The thing that I most adore about the series is the characters. They’re all actual to me, and the actors remark a constant presentation of them. I’ve never seen a unfounded recede. Label Harmon continues to amaze me. I actually met him on the Fox Studios lot at one time, and he’s honest as good in person as he is on the veil. Truly expansive guy.

But the other reasons to discover the explain are the inviting mysteries, consummate action, and a fling that is almost frenetic from beginning to extinguish. Tune in to an episode and you’re going to accumulate the same kind of investigative goodness fans of the explain question.

This episode alone is priceless. “Sandblast” brings Gibbs and Lt. Colonel Hollis Mann, Gibbs’s exhibit girlfriend, together on a case again, and it’s always fun to leer these two work through things. In a later episode, “Sharif Returns,” they fetch to enact the work they initiate here.

“Once a Hero” centers on a decorated Marine, and fans of the indicate know that anything bright Marines is one of Gibbs’s red flags. I really enjoyed Season 4, even with all the complexity and one-hand-not-knowing-what-the-other-hand-is-doing machinations, but I’m delighted Season 5 is returning to the standalone episodes and no ongoing plotlines. These characters are some of the best on television, and the writers are really estimable.

I have been waiting forever for this to finally hit DVD and hopefully it is of as capable of quality as it deserves. This was Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s first made for TV movie and absolutely the best! The storyline is adorable and the girls are titanic.

To Grandmothers House We Go is an obedient Christmas movie for the entire family. I have grown up watching this movie and I will continue to leer this movie many times each year. It’s a tradition for me to ogle this movie with my family at least once every year. Mary Kate and Ashley (Sarah and Julie) are adorable in this movie. I recommend every family examine this movie at least once and if you like it (who wouldn’t) then I recommend you buying it.

Ok, vol 1 was better, but anything would be. This dvd series has a nice vocal theme that’s very pleasurable. This place has 2 unoriginal and forgetable stories that star mainly children, and were made for children ( actually most likely they weren’t which would ask who were they made for ) . The wish is the better of the two, but considering snake girl is slow poor that’s not saying mighty. Some gargantuan visuals wasted here. Also the stories are too long. I am not really determined what Mr. Umezz’s distinguished for, but this is a anxiety. I’m stupefied vol 3 which is on the map loses because of this difficulty. Grasp or rent? Maybe neither.

Two films: Snake Girl is honest Ok (that’s why 4 stars), with some shocks, but it is THE WISH that troubled me to death. The doll the boy creates is downright repulsive and makes Chucky seem like Shirley Temple. Truly, one of the most horrific images on a indecent budget. If remade witrh stout bucks, THE WISH could dread the pants of you. This doll is scary.

I think THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST to be the funniest play in the English language, and the greatest comedy in the language not written by William Shakespeare. The play contains one hysterical line after another, and one sparkling droll spot after another. For anyone who has not seen or read the play, this movie version will be a very capable introduction to it.

The cast is profitable, and could hardly have been improved upon among today’s actors and actresses. Colin Firth is a natural to play Jack Worthing AKA Ernest, and Rupert Everett is utterly perfect as Algernon. Frances O’Connor, upon whom I must confess I have a tall crush, plays Gwendolyn, and Reese Witherspoon does a kindly job portraying a young Englishwoman. Judi Dench hands in yet another strong performance as Lady Bracknell. The performances of all of these performers are completely satisfying.

Nevertheless, the movie fails to be the definitive film version of Wilde’s play. There are two reasons for this. The first is the presence of an earlier, stronger film. The second is a series of poor decisions made in the making of this film. Taking the second point first, this novel film makes a number of embellishments and alterations in the Wilde play, most of which are not very successful and are more than a dinky distracting. For instance, noteworthy of the first scene of the play is relocated in a number of locations, including a brothel, instead of Algernon’s lodgings. Instead of arriving at Jack Worthing’s country estate by rail, Algernon arrives by hot air balloon (!) and Gwendolyn arrives by motorcar. There are a number of scenes in which Cecily imagines knights and nymphs that are quite grating. And, worst of all, Gwendolyn has “Ernest” tattooed on her buttocks, a rather absurd addition. None of these effect the movie more luscious, and primarily befriend as distractions. There are also several scenes with creditors chasing Algernon, attempting to find debts. All could have been deleted and we would have been left with a stronger and more inviting movie.

The first mentioned obstacle to this becoming the definitive veil version is the 1952 film directed by Anthony Asquith. As obedient as the original cast is, the prior cast was, with only one exception, grand stronger. Michael Redgrave was, I have to admit, a powerful better Jack Worthing than Colin Firth. And while I savor Frances O’Connor, Joan Greenwood was probably the best Gwendolyn one could possibly imagine. Anyone doubting this should do a line-by-line comparison between the two performances. Select unbiased one line, when Gwendolyn says, “I have the gravest doubts upon the subject. But I intend to crush them.” O’Connor delivers the line excellently, but Greenwood, with her delicate, deep, rich, plummy teach stretches the line out magnificently, caressing every syllable. Rupert Everett surpasses the performance of Michael Dennison as Algernon, and Reese Witherspoon comes cessation to matching Dorothy Tutin as Cecily, but not even the large Judi Dench can arrive discontinuance to Dame Edith Evans fabulous performance as Lady Bracknell. The 1952 version also featured the inimitable and unforgettable Margaret Rutherford as Miss Prism and Miles Malleson as Rev. Chasuble.

The one draw in which the newer film surpasses the earlier film is in making the entire affair feel more like a film than a filmed play. As pleasing as the Redgrave-Greenwood version was, it was comely great a straight filming of the play, with very exiguous in the scheme of deviation or departure. The quandary is that writer-director Oliver Parker obviously doesn’t trust Wilde to be silly enough. So he tarts up Oscar’s masterpiece with some truly unimaginative interpolations (recognize below) . Worse, he cuts out far too many choice Wildean bits to gain room for this nonsense. (In fairness, some of these prick bits appear in the “Gradual the Scenes” featurette.)

Chief among the interpolated idiocies are whisk scenes (what is this, a Mack Sennett 2-reeler? ) ; balloon rides; ragtime music; Gwendolyn getting her butt tattooed (while wearing fanny-floss panties — yeah, that’s really Victorian) ; Jack & Algy’s embarrassing minstrel act to woo the girls; far too many pseudo-Burne Jones medieval-symbolism shots; Lady B.’s nefarious past; and some wince-inducing attempts at witty dialogue that fit into Oscar’s sparkling stuff about as well as a limerick would fit into Shakespeare.

The cast cannot be faulted. Even when they’re badly directed (e.g., Lady B.’s climactic sappy grin — about as honorable to this quintessential tightass as the proverbial object floating in the proverbial punchbowl), the actors are ample. when allowed to do Wilde’s staunch dialogue, they’re a joy to search for. Particularly reliable of price are Reese Witherspoon and Frances O’Connor, who are perfectly delightful as Gwendolyn & Cecily (no, not the Pigeon sisters, for all you Neil Simon fans) . They effortlessly grasp the worldly innocence and innocent worldliness of Wilde’s most beguiling heroines.

The sets, photography & costumes are splendid. If only Parker had trusted his source material a bit more, this would be an undisputed classic instead of an luscious near-miss.

Who can forget that classic bass line intro! Barney Miller is finally on DVD in a two DVD plot featuring the first 13 episodes of season 1 totally uncut and commercial free for the first time! Barney Miller ran from Jan. 1975 to May 1982 (8 seasons, 170 episodes) . The sitcom was a modern opinion, concerning a group of Police Detectives and their Captain and the goings-on in a NY precinct squadroom. The cast, which would originate shrimp changes over the years, had to be one of the most diverse in TV history. In season one, the cast includes Barney (Hal Linden), Wojciehowicz (Max Gail), Harris (Ron Glass), Fish (Abe Vigoda), Yemana (Jack Soo) and Chano (Gregory Sierra) . Okay, I know there was a lot of dreck befriend then too, (Remember “The Nancy Walker Reveal”? Count yourself lucky if you don’t.) but it does seem that the 70s were the golden age of the TV sitcom, with such ground-breakers as “All In The Family,” “M*A*S*H” and “Mary Tyler Moore” leading the method. Those resplendent shows always got their due in terms of valuable applause, but nestled among them was a aloof petite gem of wit and insight that to my mind was never fully appreciated, then or now.

That point to is “Barney Miller,” and finally, at long last, it comes to DVD. That alone is reason to rejoice. The exhibit has been magnificent considerable gone from syndication for years, for some exclusive reason. The Internet Movie Data Nasty has almost nothing on it. Virtually the only evidence it ever existed is Barney’s badge, which is on reveal in the Smithsonian Institution.

The first season sought to balance Barney’s home life with his work, but gradually the home, including the wife and kids, were phased out. (”Unbiased Shoot Me” followed the same trajectory, albeit remarkable more rapid. With “JSM,” however, I liked it the unusual blueprint.) Even in the pilot episode, the home sequences are stagy, dull and a one-joke affair. (Wife wants hubby to finish the force; hubby loves his job too worthy.) The reveal only displays its apt potential when we’re in the stationhouse. And Ron Glass, not a permanent member in the first year, is not explain in all the episodes. In the second reveal there is another sunless detective, named Wilson, who is frankly not very fine or amusing. They were fair to go with Glass permanently, though his Harris is not yet quite the flashy, irreverent wiseguy he later became.

Much as I’d like to give this plot five stars, the truth is the packaging is somewhat shoddy. Report and sound are decent (image is a microscopic flat), but they could have given us some extras (sincere extras) . A brief interview with the cast members today, most of whom are smooth alive, would have been nice, or maybe some commentaries from cast members about their popular episodes. Even commentary in a booklet would have been welcome. As it is, I earn the impression Sony unprejudiced slammed this together as hastily as possible.

I hope it makes money for them, however, so that they release the rest of the seasons. This was a colorful series, and the best episodes are yet to approach.

Although I’m not a mountainous fan of the character Pluto and would not be eager in watching several Pluto cartoons in a row, many of his cartoons are fun and silly. Most of the shorts were well-animated with arresting stories. Lend A Paw (#7, 1941) won an Oscar for Best Cartoon.

I am disappointed that all the 48 cartoons are not in this station and I will have to wait a year or two for the remaining Pluto cartoons, since several of my accepted Pluto cartoons are in the last cartoons.

This 2-disc DVD area is a must have! Herein are contained 29 classic shorts spanning from 1930 to 1947, in the first of what will likely be a 2 volume collection. Included are some of Pluto’s, and Disney’s best cartoons, from the Oscar winning remake “Lend a Paw,” to the first appearance of Chip `N’ Dale in “Private Pluto.” Here is a rundown of what you procure in this astounding DVD situation!

Disc 1:

The Chain Gang (1930) : In this gloomy and white Mickey Mouse short, Mickey is a prisoner in a chain gang who, after musical antics result in a riot, makes a wreck for it! Two bloodhounds, officially considered the first appearance of Pluto in a double role, are hot on his trek.

On Ice (1935) : In this early, color Mickey Mouse cartoon, the whole gang is enjoying a day on the ice, but Donald Duck’s prank playing nature puts Pluto in the spotlight.

Pluto’s Quin-Puplets (1937) : In this familiar classic, the first “official” Pluto short, we meet Pluto’s family, as his mate, Fifi, leaves him to view over their 5 puppies while she goes after some sausages. The outcome of which is a drunken Pluto and a racy paint catastrophe, resulting in some bizarre looking pups. Astronomical short!

Beach Picnic (1939) : Donald Duck, the official star of this short, sets out to have a picnic on the beach with Pluto in tow, but the day is execrable by a familiar flypaper routine and those pesky ants! The Duck and the dog are Astronomical together!

Bone Grief (1940) : Butch and Pluto battle it out over a bone here, the highlight of which is that famed funhouse mirror routine that saves the day! Tremendous moments with Pluto in the hall of mirrors!

Pluto’s Playmate (1941) : While Pluto is playing with a ball on the beach, a seal takes interest and becomes positive to manufacture friends, despite the dog’s resistance. Classic type of Pluto legend, to be repeated again and again in future shorts.

Canine Caddy (1941) : Mickey heads out for a game of golf, but Pluto and a gopher louse things up!

Lend a Paw (1941) : This Oscar winning short about kindness to animals is pure Disney magic! Surprisingly, it’s a remake of a murky and white Mickey short! Mountainous yarn about Pluto regretfully rescuing a drowning kitten that starts to purchase his space in Mickey’s home. Pluto’s devil and angel gain their most memorable appearance in this one!

Pluto, Junior (1942) : Pluto’s pup, Pluto Junior, can’t seem to quit out of pains, even in his gain backyard!

The Army Mascot (1942) : Pluto notices how well fed the local Army mascots are and decides to try to replace one of them. He foolishly chooses a grouchy goat!

The Sleepwalker (1942) : Pluto meets his second mountainous cartoon adore, Dina the Dachshund, in this classic short. However, he’s more involved in hanging onto his bone than sparking romance. Too awful his sleepwalking is working against him.

Pluto and the Armadillo (1943) : On a scoot to Brazil, Pluto’s ball gets mixed up with a genuine Armadillo in a brief halt off between flights! Very cute short that features Mickey, too!

Private Pluto (1943) : Pluto is given orders to guard a cannon from suspected saboteurs. To our delight, those saboteurs are Chip `N’ Dale in their first ever appearance! They’re living in the gun and using it to crack and store their nut supply!

Springtime For Pluto (1944) : This rarely seen, very luminous Pluto short is a pure delight! It’s rarities like this that are the gold nuggets of the Disney Treasures series! The Pan-like Spirit of Spring awakes Pluto to a shiny unusual day, but his enjoyment is eventually smothered by the down-sides of nature.

First Aiders (1944) : Hooray, Pluto and Figaro! This short is one of those mammoth Disney team-ups that features a star from Disney’s “Pinocchio,” Figaro the cat! In this archaic fave of mine (I worship Pluto and Figaro shorts), the boys battle it out while Minnie attempts to practice her first-aid skills on them.

Dog Witness (1945) : This is another fave of mine! Pluto is a Navy dog, and is given orders to maintain intruders off the ship. A pesky rat causes difficulty for him though, setting his sights on the ship’s galley!

Canine Casanova (1945) : Pluto is madly in appreciate with Dina, but can’t score her to return the sentiment, until he rescues her from the local dog pound!

The Myth of Coyote Rock (1945) : Another ancient fave! Pluto is a sheepdog that has to fend off the legendary Crooked Tail, the coyote!

Canine Patrol (1945) : In this short, Pluto works for the U.S. Flee Guard and takes his job a slight too seriously, doing his best to sustain a cute puny turtle off the beach!

Pluto’s Kid Brother (1946) : K.B. can’t pause out of peril, and he badly needs tremendous bro Pluto’s benefit when Butch tricks him into robbing a butcher shop!

In Dutch (1946) : Pluto is the local milk delivery dog in a slight Dutch village. He and Dina catch in grief one day, when Pluto’s wooing results in a fraudulent dike dread sounding off. But, when the dike actually does spring a leak, it’s Pluto and Dina who keep the day!

Squatter’s Rights (1946) : Chip `N’ Dale are benefit to torment Pluto again, when Mickey and Pluto acquire them living in the stove of a cabin they are vacationing in!

The Purloined Pup (1946) : A wealthy puppy has been dognapped! It’s up to police dog Pluto to locate the bad pup in the hideout of the number one suspect, Butch the bulldog!

Pluto’s Housewarming (1947) : When Pluto is sharp into a luxurious novel doghouse, he discovers an unwanted houseguest in the originate of that cute puny turtle. He has bigger things to concern about, though, when Butch decides to recede in too!

This is a improbable collection of classic Disney cartoons, principal for the Disney or Pluto fanatic!
